Silence Is Where God Is
What is Spiritual Direction?
“Spiritual direction is a relationship between a person seeking a more Christ-like life and another who serves as a guide to the process. Spiritual direction is fundamentally the art of listening to the soul journey of another.” – MaryKate Morse
“Spiritual direction is the name given to a particular kind of helping relationship whose primary objective is to discern how God is inviting someone to be, to live, to appreciate, and to act in the midst of life” – Jeannette Bakke
Spiritual direction differs from other listening professions in its fundamental focus. Whilst it may resemble psychotherapy, I am not diagnosing pathology or helping you solve problems. Whilst it shares elements with counselling, discipling, and mentoring, its purpose is distinct.
The focus of spiritual direction is your relationship with God. Counselling centres on your relationship with yourself and others. Discipling explores your relationship with God through a particular theology and tradition. Spiritual direction helps you notice the ways God is already reaching out to you—in your prayer, in your daily experiences, in the ordinary moments of life.
As a spiritual director, I journey alongside you to listen for God’s movement in your life and encourage you to deepen your connection with the Divine.
What I Don’t Do
I won’t give instructions or ‘life direction’. My aim isn’t to problem-solve or tell you what to do in your relationship with God or how to make life choices. Instead, I serve as a spiritual companion, creating a safe listening space where you can connect with your inner life and notice what is already happening in your relationship with God.
Who Needs Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual direction is for everyone, at any stage of life's journey—beginning, middle, or end. It's for those seeking accompaniment on their spiritual path. People come to spiritual direction for many reasons and from all walks of life. Since all of life is sacred, any aspect can be discussed.
What Do We Talk About?
Often, our conversations can begin with anything you want to share—your relationships, challenges, frustrations, a recent dream, or simply the ordinary events of your day-to-day life. I may ask a few questions to help you begin. My deeply held conviction is that God is present and active in every part of our lives. As a spiritual director, I meet you where you are with God. I listen for how God is at work in your life. I might suggest a Scripture passage, a poem, or something to pray about, but I won't be 'directive' in the conventional sense. The aim is to create a listening space for grace. In the experience of sharing, you may discover sacred moments in your everyday life. I'll listen to your story and ask questions to help you discern and connect with what is happening within you. Sometimes we may use creative art-making processes to help us connect with our deeper selves and with God. This relationship is built on confidentiality, non-judgement, and—paradoxically—being non-directive.
